National Garden Month! Get involved with the St. Vincent De Paul parish garden.
This garden was started about 10 years ago by Barb Hagebusch, Sacred Heart High School science teacher, to teach students about growing vegetables and plants that support butterflies and bees. The Social Concerns commission took over maintenance and planting of the garden several years ago. All the vegetables grown are donated to the Open-Door Lunch Program. The garden has been supported by parishioners (especially Bob Simon who built the raised boxes), grants from Catholic Charities, Pettis County Health and Day of Caring. Currently, about 6 parishioners do the watering, planting and harvesting. They could use additional volunteers. Sacred Heart School Students also added a Rosary path that anyone is welcome to use as they pray the rosary.
Joy Simon Chairs the garden and organizes the workers for the garden. She is also interested in donations of seeds (green beans, lettuce, spinach, cucumber and squash) seed potatoes, and plants (tomatoes, peppers, etc). Contact her if you have a donation or would like to help with the garden. Many hands make light work! Plant and seed donations can be dropped off at the rectory during their business hours. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Joy at 660-473-1803.
